It can be smart to be dumb

چکیده

An important problem in game theory is why bounded rationality occurs, e.g., why altruism to non-kin occurs. Previous explanations involved computational limitations of the players, repeated play among the players etc. As an alternative, we introduce a pre-play step in which each player i chooses a “persona”, i.e., a ficticious utility function she commits to use in the game. By adopting different personas, player i induces different moves by the other players in the game. Sometimes by adopting a “bounded rational” persona, player i induces moves by the other players that increase i’s true utility function. In such cases, player i’s acting in a “bounded rational” way can be optimal for i. This phenomenon can explain some experimental observations concerning the prisoner’s dilemma, the ultimatum game, and the traveler’s dilemma.

Design Issue and Proposed Implementation of Communication Aid for Deaf & Dumb People

Deaf and dumb people communicate among themselves using sign languages, but they find it difficult to communicate with the outside world. This paper proposes a full proof system to aid communication of deaf and dumb people communicationg using Indian sign language (ISL) with normal people where hand gestures will be converted into appropriate text message. The hand gestures corresponding to ISL...

A Smart-Dumb/Dumb-Smart Algorithm for Efficient Split-Merge MCMC

Split-merge moves are a standard component of MCMC algorithms for tasks such as multitarget tracking and fitting mixture models with unknown numbers of components. Achieving rapid mixing for split-merge MCMC has been notoriously difficult, and state-of-the-art methods do not scale well. We explore the reasons for this and propose a new split-merge kernel consisting of two sub-kernels: one combi...

SODA: Smart Objects, Dumb Archives

We present the Smart Object, Dumb Archive (SODA) model for digital libraries (DLs). The SODA model transfers functionality traditionally associated with archives to the archived objects themselves. We are exploiting this shift of responsibility to facilitate other DL goals, such as interoperability, object intelligence and mobility, and heterogeneity. Objects in a SODA DL negotiate presentation...

Authenticating Secure Tokens Using Slow Memory Access

We present an authentication protocol that allows a token, such as a smart card, to authenticate itself to a back-end trusted computer system through an untrusted reader. This protocol relies on the fact that the token will only respond to queries slowly, and that the token owner will not sit patiently while the reader seems not to be working. This protocol can be used alone, with \dumb" memory...

Device Integration of CAN Controller, Data Converters, and ISP Non-Volatile Memory Facilitates Smart Sensor Connectivity to Controller Area Networks

IEEE 1451 specifies smart sensor function and connectivity to networks. This marks an evolution from central system control by a master processor with “dumb” nodes to distributed control networks of “smart” sensors. Controller Area Network (CAN) is a multi-master protocol designed for communications in real-time, distributed control systems. Therefore, it is logical that CAN be used to network ...

From Dumb Wireless Sensors to Smart Networks using Network Coding

The vision of wireless sensor networks is one of a smart collection of tiny, dumb devices. These motes may be individually cheap, unintelligent, imprecise, and unreliable. Yet they are able to derive strength from numbers, rendering the whole to be strong, reliable and robust. In the face of scaling the network under uncertainty (due to a combination of fading channels, interference and dynamic...
